It came as a surprise in August this year that Ferrari unveiled the replacement of the long due California T amidst mild speculations. Dubbed the Ferrari Portofino, it made its first public appearance at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in grand fashion and straightaway it was a bit of a looker. The Portofino takes power from the highly successful 3.9-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine which is good enough to generate a maximum power output of 590 horses and 760 Nm of peak torque between 3,000 rpm and 5,200 rpm. The new entry-level model within Ferrari’s portfolio is claimed to achieve standstill to 100 kmph acceleration time in just 3.5 seconds before topping out 320 kmph.

The Italian supercar manufacturer has made changes to several components of the engine. For instance, the con rods and pistons are new while the air intake is completely redesigned to better efficiency and performance. In addition to them, there is the new Variable Boost Management adjusting torque between gears to ensure a more vibrant engine than what was found in the California T.

It also boasts a new exhaust system along with the F1-nurtured third generation electronic rear differential and power steering for effective feedback. The now-traditional magnetorheological damping is upgraded to complement the all-new aluminium chassis construction.

The California T can be summarised as sort of feminine with its all curvy nature but the Portofino completely changes that perception with a sublime Ferrari stance. It has taken design inspiration from 812 Superfast and the GTC4Lusso that was recently launched in India with an edgy front fascia, bold side profile and bossy character lines – particularly the sharp headlamps will catch you for words at a glance.

Featuring a folding hardtop as standard, it has become the most powerful production in the world of that retractable spyder type. On the inside, the Portofino’s cabin gets the same steering wheel as the 812 Superfast and the GTC4Lusso. The subtle and modern interior bodes well with the sporty exterior while the infotainment system is also derived from the Lusso.

In a similar fashion to the foreign markets, the Portofino will replace the California in India and is reported to enter the market by September next year. It could be priced in excess of Rs. 3 crore (ex-showroom) and will act as the entry-level model for the supercar manufacturer in domestic market.
