Land Rover Range Rover Review

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover finishes in the middle of its class. It has the lavish cabin you expect from a luxury vehicle, but it’s also among the most capable off-road SUVs available. However, its disappointing predicted reliability rating keeps it from ranking higher.

Is the Land Rover Range Rover a Good SUV?

The Land Rover Range Rover is a good choice in the luxury large SUV class. Its powerful engine lineup includes a turbodiesel, and its fantastic off-road credentials make it one of most capable SUVs – if not the most capable SUV – in the class. On the pavement, the Range Rover is fairly maneuverable and delivers a comfortable ride. Inside, it has spacious, comfortable seats and one of the most opulent cabins. However, many competitors offer more seats, more cargo space, and an easier-to-use infotainment system.

Should I Buy the Land Rover Range Rover?

You should consider purchasing the Range Rover if you’re looking for an SUV that feels just as at home heading to the opera as it does on the trails. However, this Land Rover has one of the highest starting prices in the class, and more practical rivals are worth considering. The Toyota Land Cruiser is a good example. Consider the Mercedes-Benz G-Class if you’re not too concerned with price. Like the Range Rover, it’s also one of the most costly, high-end luxury off-roaders on the market.

Should I Buy a New or Used Land Rover Range Rover?

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover is part of a generation that began with the 2013 model year. There have been a few additions over the previous years, including a new long-wheelbase version, stop-stop technology in the supercharged V8, and a new supercharged base V6 engine for the 2014 model year. For 2015, the Land Rover added a long-wheelbase option for the HSE trim and additional driver assistance options.

The 2016 Range Rover received InControl Remote smartphone integration, a new turbodiesel V6, and additional horsepower in the HSE trim’s V6. For 2017, the Range Rover received a new 10-inch touch screen and a SVAutobiography Dynamic trim. Lastly, the 2018 Range Rover receives minor interior and exterior design enhancements. An additional touch screen replaces the previous model’s knobs and buttons. Also, the SVAutobiography Dynamic trim gets more horsepower.

Since there aren’t too many changes made to the 2018 Range Rover, you could save some money with an older model. It’s best to skip the 2013 model and its weaker engine lineup. Instead, focus on a 2014 or newer model. If find that an older Range Rover is right for you, check out our Used Car Deals page to learn about incentives on used vehicles.

How Much Does the Land Rover Range Rover Cost?

The Land Rover Range Rover’s base price is a bit above $87,000, which is a lot of money even by luxury large SUV standards. Only a couple of class rivals have higher starting prices, while several have base prices in the $70,000s or lower.

In its higher trims, the Range Rover can get really expensive. Higher trims feature much stronger (and more expensive) engines, and they’re also available in a long-wheelbase model, which further ups the price. Put it all together, and you’re looking at a starting price north of $200,000 for the long-wheelbase version of the top trim, the SVAutobiography Dynamic.

Land Rover Range Rover Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Land Rover Range Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser?

The Range Rover and the Toyota Land Cruiser are close in our class rankings. When you think of the Land Rover, you think of off-roading. However, the Land Cruiser has excellent off-road abilities as well. The Land Cruiser also has a perfect predicted reliability rating. By comparison,  the Range Rover has a below-average rating.  While the Toyota can’t keep up with the Range Rover’s engine options, the Land Cruiser’s lone power plant still has plenty of oomph. The Land Cruiser also has a higher max towing capacity. Still, the Range Rover delivers a smoother ride and better gas mileage.

On the inside, the Land Rover is the clear winner. It seats more people (eight versus the Land Rover’s five), but the Land Rover has a nicer and more comfortable interior. The Range Rover also has a more user-friendly infotainment system than the one in the Land Cruiser. In terms of cargo space, both SUVs are pretty even. Choosing between the two will come down to what you value the most. While the Land Rover is more refined and has better performance, the Land Cruiser costs less. For a more practical vehicle, go with the Land Cruiser. If you’re willing to spend extra, go for the Range Rover.

Which Is Better: Land Rover Range Rover or Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

In its 4×4 trim, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class delivers tremendous off-road prowess, and it has a higher predicted reliability rating. On all other accounts, however, this luxury large SUV doesn’t really live up to the Range Rover. The Mercedes-Benz has a posh cabin, but the Land Rover offers better seating comfort and a tad more cargo space.

Moreover, the Land Rover is easier to drive, has better handling, and gets superior fuel economy estimates. The Mercedes-Benz has an easier-to-use infotainment system, but the G-Class’ base price is significantly higher than the Range Rover’s, with the G-Class’ upper trims being even more costly. There really isn’t much of a reason to purchase the G-Class over the Range Rover.

Range Rover Interior

How Many People Does the Range Rover Seat?

The Range Rover seats five people (four in some models), which is less than most other SUVs in the class. Both rows of seats have plenty of space and excellent comfort.

Range Rover and Car Seats

There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors. There’s plenty of room for most car seats to fit, but neither the lower anchors nor tether anchors are the easiest to connect to.

Range Rover Interior Quality

This Land Rover has a stunning cabin that looks great and is brimming with premium materials. Overall, this is one of the nicest interiors of any SUV.

Range Rover Cargo Space

The Range Rover has less cargo space than many competitors, but it still has a usable cargo area. You get more than 32 cubic feet of space with all seats in use – enough space for the family’s weekend vacation luggage or for the gear you need for a beach day. Fold the rear seats down, and you’ll have nearly 72 cubic feet of space (nearly 83 cubic feet in long-wheelbase models). That’s room for snowboards, bicycles, and other large outdoor gear.

Range Rover Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Standard features in the Range Rover include a 10-inch touch screen, navigation, a 13-speaker Meridian sound system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a 29-speaker Meridian audio system.

Range Rover Performance

Range Rover Engine: No Shortage of Choices

There are nearly a half-dozen engine configurations to choose from with the Range Rover. They range from the 340-horsepower supercharged V6 base engine to the 557-horsepower supercharged V8 in the SVAutobiography Dynamic trim. There’s also a turbodiesel engine. With any engine, you’ll get plenty of power. The higher-horsepower engines also deliver strong acceleration.

Range Rover Gas Mileage: Better Than Many Rivals

Because it comes with a V6 instead of a V8, the Range Rover gets better fuel economy than many competitors. It earns 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway with the base engine. Compared to V8-powered rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Range Rover will save you about $150 and $1,300 per year in fuel costs, respectively.

The only reason it’s close between the Range Rover and the Land Cruiser is that the Range Rover requires premium gasoline (like most luxury vehicles), and the Toyota doesn’t. For even better fuel economy, the diesel engine is thriftier (22/28 mpg city/highway, to be exact).

Range Rover Ride and Handling: Both Good

The Range Rover is maneuverable for a large SUV, making it pretty easy to drive on most roads. It also delivers a supple ride, and its air suspension soaks up bumps in the road with ease.

Range Rover Off-Road Performance

The Range Rover has a bevy of standard and available off-road-oriented features that help cement its standing as a stellar off-road vehicle. Regardless of what terrain you want to traverse, this SUV is up for the task.

Range Rover Reliability

Is the Land Rover Range Rover Reliable?

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover earns a below-average predicted reliability rating of 2.5 out of five from J.D. Power.

Land Rover Range Rover Warranty

The Land Rover Range Rover is covered by a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, which is a similar term to several class rivals.
